In February 2020, Major General Madhuri Kanitkar was promoted to the rank of a Lieutenant General. This historic promotion makes her the third woman officer and the first pediatrician to rise to the second-highest rank in the Indian Armed Forces.

The 71-year-old pioneer co-founded the institution on 21 May 1977, as a primary healthcare center as part of the Sri KanchiKamakoti Medical Trust, along with his wife and co-practitioner DrRadha Ramani. Till today, both of them provide their time, resources and expertise totally free for this movement of Sankara. The institute then blossomed into a full-fledged eye care hospital in 1985 on 5.5 acres of gifted land. Today, Dr. RVR oversees 10 Sankara Eye Hospitals that have performed over 2.1 million eye surgeries.
