The origins of Sankara Eye Foundation can be traced back to the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust; established in 1977 with a small medical clinic.
Emergence of Eye Care
In 1985, a new chapter in the history of the Trust was born under the leadership of Dr. Ramani and Dr. Radha Ramani and a deep commitment from Dr. S.Balasubramaniam. In the 1980’s, the incidences of preventable and curable blindness in India were very high and there was much that needed to be done. Thus, the idea of focusing on a specialized eye care area emerged.
Establishment of the Hospital
A good friend of Dr. Ramani came forward and donated 5.5 acres of land in the Saravanampatty area of Coimbatore. With a lot of effort, the wild land was cleared and the Sankara Eye Hospital was erected with the highest standards in mind.
Mission Headquarter
Coimbatore hospital is the seed of the tree that has now mushroomed into 8 super specialty replica hospitals across India. What started as a small medical center in Coimbatore has over the years, become a 500-bed state-of-the-art model eye care hospital. Today, the hospital is the mission headquarters for SEF, India and the base for all training of any new medical staff hired for the other hospitals. It has been a benchmark for standards adopted at all our hospitals across India.
